The gospel of Jesus Christ—the way back to God—includes faith in Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end. We’ve covered the first four parts in this series already. Let’s go over a quick summary of what we’ve learned so far.

When we have faith in Jesus Christ, we believe that He loves us and has the power to forgive us and make us better people. Our faith leads us to repent, or have a change of heart that motivates us to change what we’re doing wrong and diligently obey God’s commandments. One of those commandments is baptism, where we come up out of the water as a symbol of our rebirth as a new person and covenant to follow Jesus Christ for the rest of our lives. After baptism we receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, or the right to have the Holy Spirit with us always to guide us along the path back to our Father in Heaven. Then we must endure to the end.

Endure to the end? That sounds like running a marathon or something—a lot of work that sounds difficult and not very fun.

It’s true that the life of a follower of Jesus Christ can have its difficult times. Faith in Jesus Christ and a commitment to follow Him don’t prevent the hard things in life from happening, like financial difficulty, hurtful choices of others, or the death of a loved one. However, enduring to the end doesn’t mean gritting our teeth and powering through the hard stuff. What it does mean is that every day, in both good and bad times, we continue to exercise faith in Christ, repent, keep our promises to God, and follow the guidance of the Holy Ghost. It means we continue to change and progress on our journey back to Him. If we fall down (and we will) or get off track, we get back on the path, putting our trust in the Savior and His ability to save us. Enduring to the end is remaining faithful to Christ’s laws and promises throughout our lives and letting Him guide us.

Watch as Dieter F. Uchtdorf, a modern-day Apostle of Jesus Christ, explains this joyful process of hope and deliverance.
