The Gospel of Jesus Christ, Part 1: Faith

We often make choices based on an anticipated result. “If I do X, then Y will happen.” This motivating power that pushes and inspires us to act is called faith. When we wake up in the morning, we expect the sun to rise. When we plant a seed, we expect it to grow. These beliefs are because we have faith that a result will happen. Having faith is also key to following Jesus Christ.

We can learn about faith from the scriptures. In the Book of Mormon, a prophet named Alma taught, “And now as I said concerning faith—faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true” (Alma 32:21).

Faith in Jesus Christ is a belief that He is our Savior.

Faith in Jesus Christ helps us overcome our daily concerns and challenges.

Faith in Jesus Christ is essential to living the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Faith in Jesus Christ means having a firm belief that He is the Son of God. He is the Redeemer of the world. He overcame all for us. His grace and mercy are what we are dependent on to return to our Heavenly Father’s presence.

Progression in life requires action, and action in life requires acts of faith. We do something or make specific choices because we believe that the outcome will be good. We won’t be able to have a perfect knowledge of everything while on earth, so we shouldn’t wait around for that perfect knowledge to come before allowing ourselves to make decisions. We have to make choices based on faith, and as we do that, our knowledge grows and we can also grow in confidence.

Even though we haven’t seen Christ, we can build faith in Him by reading about His life in the scriptures. As we exercise faith by choosing to follow Jesus Christ, we start building a relationship with Him. Exercising faith in Christ helps us understand His role in our life and prepares us to follow Him in other ways.
