Glory to God in the Highest

The Selfless Sacrifice of Two

During the holiday season, we usually remember to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and His tremendous sacrifice in our behalf. He is the reason our souls have a fighting chance of surviving a world such as ours. In our holiday celebration of Christ, we sometimes forget about Heavenly Father’s role in the story.

When reading the following familiar scripture, do you usually focus on the gift or the giver? “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). It’s important not to overlook the fact that two individuals are being spoken of. It is also important to remember that during His mortal ministry, Christ gave all of the credit and glory for His accomplishments and success to His Father (see John 14:10, 13).

Our Father and Jesus Christ have been working in tandem for the salvation of mankind since the beginning of time. They love us beyond our capacity to understand and have gone to great lengths to help us rediscover that love. There is evidence of it everywhere—if we’ll only look. It is especially evident in the stories of Christmas.

The Good News

When Jesus Christ was born, an angel announced His birth to the shepherds, who were initially frightened by the heavenly sight. “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people” (Luke 2:10). The angel’s words feel celebratory.

When a “multitude of the heavenly host” joined the scene a few verses later, praising God, they said, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men” (Luke 2:14). The assumption that rejoicing was happening on both sides of the veil is confirmed. Everyone who understood what was happening praised God for the saving gift of Jesus Christ.

Remember the Father’s Role

So, during this special time of year, let’s remember the Father’s role in the story of Christmas—which is a story that is connected to every life lived. The selfless gift of our Father is His Son. When we begin to understand the magnitude of this gift, it inevitably causes our hearts to burn with gratitude. We gain a deeper understanding of the word “hosanna,” and we, along with the host of heaven, can proclaim, “Glory to God in the highest.”
