Finding Self-Esteem in Christ

By Mormon.org

Too often too many of us try to find our self-esteem by relying on the world’s definition of what’s important. We focus on how skinny or in shape we are, what kind of clothes we wear, our relationship status, the number of “friends” we have, or how much money we make. But your true, intrinsic worth isn’t measured by what the world values—your worth is really measured by how your Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ see you.

Relying on Jesus Christ

You may feel inadequate or often have feelings of self-doubt because you lack what many others think is fashionable or valuable or socially acceptable. But you should never feel this way. Don’t go through life fearing what others might think about you. Don’t look at external features and material things to find self-acceptance. Don’t look in the mirror and reject yourself. Open your eyes and your heart and see your inner God-given worth.

As a child of God, you are enough just as you are. You’re unique. You’re important. In fact, you’re priceless. You are the reason Jesus sacrificed Himself, ached for every sorrow, and suffered for every sin.

When you’re feeling inadequate, turn your thoughts to Jesus Christ. He never has and never will think that you’re not good enough. Christ doesn’t love you only when you’re doing well—He loves you perfectly and unconditionally, no matter what the world is telling you. And He has promised that those who come unto Him will find peace and happiness. He taught, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your souls” (Matthew 11:28–29).

Coming to Know Jesus Christ

To overcome self-doubt and personal fears, don’t focus on yourself. Don’t just call a friend to give you an ego boost. Don’t spend 15 minutes telling a friend how skinny and gorgeous her hair, makeup, and clothes are. Instead, focus on Christ and your relationship with Him. Seek to follow His example by serving those around you. Read the scriptures to learn more about Him, His life, and His teachings.

You can also come to know Jesus better through the testimonies of His prophets and by receiving strength from others who are trying to improve their lives through following Jesus Christ.

Finding self-esteem can be hard, especially in the swirl of social media and the world’s unforgiving standards, but all things are possible when you rely on Christ and have support from His followers.

You won’t find peace and joy in worldly things, at least not lasting peace and joy. That can only be found in Jesus Christ.

So find meaning in what matters; find meaning in your faith in and personal relationship with Jesus Christ. When you do, you’ll know your self-worth, because Jesus does, too.
