Resisting Temptation: 3 Honest to Goodness Ways to Do It

By Mormon.org
Hands clasped together in earnest prayer

Make Changes

If you are struggling with a temptation, first identify the when and where of a temptation by asking yourself these questions:

- Is there a specific time when this temptation seems to arise?

- Where am I most often when this temptation comes?

- Is this more of a struggle when I am alone or have idle time?

- Is there anything else I can identify that contributes to the temptation?

Evaluate your answers and find ways to eliminate or replace what you have identified as struggling points. For example, if your struggle comes during idle time, find an uplifting, positive activity you can consistently participate in instead (such as exercising or reading scriptures).

Find Support

As overwhelmed as you may feel with temptation, rest assured, someone has felt that way before. By finding or creating a support group, you will see you are not alone. While others may not struggle the same way or with the same things, you will find they have temptations just as real as yours.

It is possible to create your own support group with family and friends, but this can sometimes be difficult or embarrassing. It is because of this that the Addiction Recovery Program and other similar support groups have been created. Check to see if there is a program near you.

Remember the Savior

The most important part of resisting temptation is remembering our Savior, Jesus Christ. He set the perfect example for us on how to deal with temptation (see Matthew 4).

He also felt all of our struggles when He suffered for us in the Garden of Gethsemane. Because of that suffering, He knows how to help us resist temptation. When we pray for His assistance, He hears us, and He will make the burden of temptation lighter.

“Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved” (Psalm 55:22).
