Facing Addiction: Hope Through the Healing of Jesus Christ’s Atonement

Addiction can enter one’s life and turn his or her world upside down. Addiction, which comes in many forms, can consume and even control someone’s life. Many turn to drugs, alcohol and other stimulants in a way to cope and deal with the stress of life’s problems; for many addiction soon follows. But there is a better way, a way that heals instead of causing pain. That way is through the Savior Jesus Christ. Through Christ’s Atonement we can not only be healed from addictions but we can also deal with the sorrow of life.

There are many types of addictions—from drugs, alcohol, and pornography to spending and gambling addictions. Anyone can fall victim to addiction, and temptation doesn’t stop with age. If you are trapped in addiction or are close to someone dealing with an addiction, you can be healed though our Savior Jesus Christ.

Addiction can become an overwhelming burden that is hard to face alone. Not only does addiction hinder our agency but it can also destroy our relationships with others.

From the Book of Mormon in the book of Alma we read part of what the Savior endured for us:

“He shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people. … And he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities” (Alma 7:11–12).

Because He suffered through the Atonement, Christ has experienced the pain of the world. He understands the emotional and physical pain we feel. Because He endured and overcame the pain of this world, He can heal us. As we accept Him and seek His help, we can feel relief from sin and addiction.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provides and supports an addiction recovery program. Based on the principles taught in the gospel of Jesus Christ, participants can experience healing from addiction. Visit the Addiction Recovery web page for more information.
