Two Great Examples of Self-Confidence in the Scriptures

Self-confidence is a feeling of trust in one's abilities, qualities, and judgment. Additional confidence comes when one has faith in God. The scriptures are filled with examples of strong leaders who possess great self-confidence. Here are two examples of people with great self-confidence found in the scriptures.

Esther Saves Her People

The Bible shares the story of Queen Esther. With great courage Esther went before the king to plead to save her people. After Esther’s uncle Mordecai refused to bow before one of the men who worked for the king, the man thought that the king should destroy all the Jews. The king wasn’t aware that Esther was a Jew. Going before the king without being called risked being killed, even for the queen. Along with her people Esther fasted and prayed for the strength to talk to the king. Esther approached the king, and the king spared Esther and her people.

Esther relied on prayer to give her the strength to do the right thing. By acting with confidence in God, Esther was able to save her people.

Ammon Protecting the King’s Sheep

The Book of Mormon teaches about Ammon. After being converted to Jesus Christ, Ammon became a great missionary. He was strong and honest and loved God. In the book of Alma we read of his great and fearless example. As Ammon was out preaching he was arrested and taken before the king. The king liked Ammon; he was pleased that Ammon wanted to stay in his land and even offered Ammon one of his daughters to marry. Ammon didn’t accept his offer but instead offered to be his servant. Ammon and some other servants were watching the king’s flocks when some enemies of the king came and scattered all of the king’s flocks. Instead of murmuring in fear of what the king would do to them once he discovered the sheep had been lost, Ammon came up with a solution. While the other servants were complaining and fearful, Ammon was doing. With the help of the other servants, Ammon gathered the flocks. When the enemies of the king came again to scatter them, Ammon was prepared. He stood up to the enemies, and to any man who lifted his arms to slay Ammon, Ammon raised his sword and smote off his arms. By doing this Ammon was able to protect the king’s flocks. The king was impressed with Ammon; Ammon’s actions left the king speechless.

Ammon trusted in God. He knew that God would protect him and help him be successful in his attempts to preach and share the gospel. He served and he gained trust. When a challenge presented itself, Ammon acted with confidence to find a solution. After this Ammon was able to teach the king about Jesus Christ.

Navigating through life can be difficult and challenging. But having confidence in ourselves and our abilities, and faith in God gives us the strength to endure and overcome the daily challenges of life. The stories above are of two faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. They loved God. They served God. They relied on God. Trust in God can change the way we view the world and the way we view ourselves. Faith in Jesus Christ and trusting God helps us increase in confidence.

2 Timothy 1:7: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
