Dealing with Stress? Consider These Tips to Help You Cope

Stress and stretching in life are an essential element to growth. But too much stress can be a bad thing. The goal of everyone should be to find a healthy balance in both physical and mental exertion. To reduce stress and find that balance, here are some recommended tips:

Be realistic

Being realistic about what you expect of yourself and others is the best defense against stress. Be real with yourself and those around you.

Open, honest and realistic communication and expectations will support growth but keep stress in check.

Keep fit – spiritually and physically

Physical bodies require rest, exercise and a good diet. Keep your soul healthy through daily prayer and scripture study.

Set priorities and goals

De-stress by prioritizing what the most important things are that need to get done. Planning will give you direction and lead to accomplishments.

Change your pace

Taking a break to do something you enjoy (including nothing) in stressful situations can help ease the pressure. Try serving someone else to put your own problems into perspective.

Share your struggles

Surround yourself with supportive people who you can confide in. Writing about your day can also be therapeutic.

Laugh

A sense of humor is vital to getting through stressful situations.

Elder Neal A. Maxwell has said, “When in situations of stress we wonder if there is any more in us to give, we can be comforted to know that God,who knows our capacity perfectly, placed us here to succeed. When we feel overwhelmed, let us recall the assurance that God will not over program us; he will not press upon us more than we can bear (D&C 50:40).” (“Meeting the Challenges of Today,”in Devotional Speeches of the Year, Provo: Brigham Young University,1978, p. 156.)
