A Father's Love

Fathers Are Irreplaceable

Everyone needs a dad. A father can be a strong set of hands, a protective embrace, and a trusted advising influence. A righteous father leads and lovingly guides his children, empowering them to become all they can be.

Fathers have distinct roles. “Mothers seem to take a dominant role in preparing their children to live within their families, present and future. Fathers seem best equipped to prepare children to function in the environment outside the family” (James E. Faust, “Fathers, Mothers, Marriage,” Ensign, Aug. 2004).

A righteous father has a far-reaching effect. There’s truth in the quote “When you teach your son, you teach your son’s son.” The same is also true for daughters. Children learn a great deal from the influence of their fathers, which impacts their self-esteem and later success in life.

Loving homes that include a father, a mother, and children are declining. Today, less than half of U.S. children under 18 live in such a home with two parents in their first marriage. Good husbands and fathers are needed more than ever for the unique and valuable contribution they provide to their families and society.

A Father's Love

The best example of a father’s love is found in the example of Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. If you’ve had a less than perfect experience with your father or as a father, you can benefit from studying and developing characteristics of the Father and the Son as found in the Holy Bible and in the Book of Mormon. By doing so, you’ll enrich your own life and the lives of your children, future children, or any child you consistently spend time with. All children can benefit from the love that typifies the perfect example of the Savior.

A father’s love has no equivalent. It has the power to build a child into a confident adult. Fathers need to remember that “their greatest contribution to the kingdom of God may not be something they do, but someone they raise” (Andy Stanley).

A Father Indeed

It’s never too late to embrace fatherhood. All men can assume this role and strengthen families and society as fathers, grandfathers, uncles, cousins, brothers, and even as sons. No matter your current station as a man, your positive influence will affect more people than you realize and will certainly cause a righteous ripple down through time. You can be a father—a father indeed.
