6 Ways to Share the Life of Christ this Christmas

Be an Example of the Believers

There is a popular saying that goes something like this: “Live in such a way that people who know you but don’t know Christ will want to know Christ because they know you.” What better time to share the life of Christ by reflecting His light in our own lives than during the Christmas season?

Recently, Thomas S. Monson, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, encouraged people everywhere to “be an example and a light” to the world by following Paul’s admonition to “be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12). He taught with power that as we pattern our lives after the Savior with these six attributes, we will be a light to the world, leading others to Christ.

During this Christmas season, we can share the life of Christ as we follow President Monson’s counsel to be an example of the believers.

Word and Conversation

President Monson combined the first two attributes, reminding us that our words and conversations should always inspire and uplift. He counseled, “Let us speak to others with love and respect, ever keeping our language clean and avoiding words or comments that would wound or offend.”

Charity

True charity is more than dropping a few coins in the red can at Christmastime. It is showing Christlike love to those around us. President Monson stated, “I am confident there are within our sphere of influence those who are lonely, those who are ill, and those who feel discouraged. Ours is the opportunity to help them and to lift their spirits.”

Spirit

He then taught, “Next, we are to be an example in spirit. To me that means we strive to have in our lives kindness, gratitude, forgiveness, and goodwill.” The Christmas season is a perfect time to practice these qualities with our family, friends, coworkers, and acquaintances.

Faith

Faith, President Monson taught, is about trusting in the Lord and His word. We strengthen our faith as we pray to a loving Heavenly Father and study His teachings diligently in the scriptures. When our faith is strong, we reflect the Light of Christ.

Purity

Finally, he taught that purity means being clean in body, mind, and spirit. This includes filling our minds with “uplifting and ennobling thoughts” and avoiding things that could cause harm. When we become or remain pure, we are entitled to the Spirit of God and we will reflect the Light of Christ.

How to Make It Happen

Do you wish to be an example of the believers by following President Monson’s counsel throughout the Christmas season? Try these ideas or come up with some of your own. You might be surprised at how good the Christmas season can feel when you are following the example of the Savior.

  • Write uplifting notes to others.
  • Speak kindly to the person behind the counter the next time you go shopping.
  • Be patient in the traffic jam and let one more car in.
  • Visit your elderly neighbor.
  • Say thank you often.
  • Find someone to serve.
  • Start every morning with prayer.
  • Study the scriptures daily to learn more about the life of Jesus Christ. You can request a free copy of the Bible or the Book of Mormon or watch some Bible videos to get started.
  • Watch uplifting messages. Here are a few to try: The Reason Behind Christmas, Wise Men Still Seek Him, and O Come, Emmanuel—Christmas Version.
  • Focus on the real reason for the season—Jesus Christ. Let go of the commercialism of Christmas and center your celebrations on the Savior of the World.

As you exemplify these six Christlike characteristics during the Christmas season, you will share the life and light of Christ with those around you and they will want to come closer to Him because they see His light in you.
