5 Amazing Benefits of the Holy Spirit

By Mormon.org

The Holy Spirit—also referred to as the Holy Ghost—is one of the greatest gifts Christ gave His Apostles and the world following His Resurrection. “And I will pray the Father,” Jesus said, “and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever” (John 14:16).

After receiving the Holy Spirit, you too can have a Comforter that abides with you forever. Here are five other ways the Holy Spirit can bless you.

You Can Have the Holy Spirit with You at All Times When You Are Worthy

After baptism, you’re given the gift of the Holy Spirit, which is the gift of His constant help—so long as you strive to live up to your baptismal covenants.

The Book of Mormon teaches, “the Spirit of the Lord doth not dwell in unholy temples” (Helaman 4:24). That means you need to live according to Christ’s gospel and follow His commandments if you want the companionship of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit Testifies of Truth

Why is it so important to live worthy to have the Holy Spirit with you?

His influence will indicate God’s love and will for you. When you need help making life choices, the Holy Spirit can confirm whether your decision is what Heavenly Father wants you to do. He will testify of truth so you can make the best decisions in your life. He will also bear witness to you that Christ is real, that the Bible is true, that following God’s plan will bring you lasting happiness and eternal life, and of the reality of countless other essential gospel truths.

The Holy Spirit Can Teach You All Things

God has provided the holy scriptures as a way for you to receive personal guidance and find answers. When you study these holy records, the Holy Spirit can help you find the answers to your questions. “For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Spirit” (1 Nephi 10:19).

The Holy Spirit Protects You

Whether it’s a “gut feeling” warning you that a decision doesn’t feel right or a strong impression to take a different route home from work, the Holy Spirit can protect you if you’re willing to listen to and act on the feelings or impressions you receive. The Holy Spirit will “teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance” (John 14:26) to help protect you in everyday life.

The Holy Spirit Will Comfort You

The Holy Spirit can also comfort you. Jesus promised His Apostles the gift of the Holy Spirit because He knew that after His death, the Apostles would live in troubling times (see John 14:16-17).

The Holy Spirit is Jesus’s gift to his Apostles and to you. You can have that same sense of calm and peace Christ gave to the early Apostles.

Receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit gives you direct access to amazing blessings, insights, and comfort. The first step to receiving the Holy Spirit is accepting Jesus as your Savior and being baptized in His name. Through His priesthood authority, you can then receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. You are then promised to have the constant companionship of the Holy Spirit—as long as you remain worthy—to guide and comfort you throughout your life.
