40 Ways to Enjoy Quality Family Time

By Mormon.org

Quantity Creates Quality

In most cases the motto “Quality, not Quantity” rings true. But when it comes to spending time with your family, the two are inseparably connected—the greater the quantity of family time, the greater the quality. President Dieter F. Uchtdorf taught: “In family relationships love is really spelled t-i-m-e, time. Taking time for each other is the key for harmony at home.”

While a weeklong vacation is a great start to quality family time, it’s what we do the other 51 weeks of the year that really matter. And even though one meaningful conversation with our children is important, it’s just a stepping-stone to the constant communication necessary for quality family relationships to thrive.

You can improve the quality of your family time by doing things together as a family every chance you get. The activities can be big or small, planned or spontaneous. It’s just about spending time together.

If you are looking for ideas to create quality family time, here are a few things you can try with your family.

Spiritual

  • Attend a worship service on Sunday
  • Read scriptures
  • Say family prayers
  • Devote one night a week to a spiritual discussion
  • Abstain from food or water for two consecutive meals, known as fasting, for someone in need

Service Oriented

  • Help refugees in your area with basic needs
  • Clean a neighbor’s yard
  • Volunteer at a local shelter
  • Participate in community service days
  • Write letters to absent family members

Daily

  • Prepare and eat a meal together
  • Do the dishes together
  • Share a bedtime story and tuck your children into bed (even big kids like this quality family time)
  • Turn off the electronics and talk (in the car, on the couch, or anywhere the family is together)
  • Sing along to the radio

Warm Weather

  • Go for a walk
  • Wash the car
  • Plant a garden
  • Play at the park
  • Make s’mores

Cold Weather

  • Shovel snow
  • Build a snowman
  • Go sledding
  • Snuggle by the fire and tell stories
  • Make homemade hot chocolate

Just for Fun

  • Play a board game
  • Eat ice cream
  • Bake a cake
  • Watch a movie
  • Ride bikes

Physical

  • Hike
  • Swim
  • Fish
  • Camp
  • Run

Educational

  • Visit the library
  • Go to a museum
  • Hold a talent show
  • Attend a family reunion
  • Learn about your family ancestors through FamilySearch.org

So, by all means, plan the once-in-a-lifetime experiences with your family. But for the real quality family time, make family togetherness a priority by doing simple things together every day.
