4 Ways to Share the True Meaning of Christmas

We can find the true meaning of Christmas when we shift our focus from “What will I get?” to “What can I give?” When we change our thinking from receiving to giving, we find the real spirit of Christmas. Giving our time to others and focusing on the needs of those around us helps us serve like the Savior and remember His significance this time of year. Serving and sharing fills us with the joy that comes from following Christ—a joy that can be seen and felt by those around us. Here are four ideas on how to share the true meaning of Christmas with those around you.

Share the Gift of Your Time and Talents

We often associate gifts with physical presents that we purchase. Gift giving can often become so routine that we don’t put much time or thought into our purchases. Taking extra time to really think of others’ needs can make all the difference in a gift. A gift doesn’t need to be a physical object either. The greatest gift we’ve been given was the gift of the life of Jesus Christ. We can share similarly by giving the gift of our time. Giving someone the gift of your time, company, or talents can be just what he or she needs. Ideas include creating and giving a coupon book for household chores or other service, teaching someone a new skill, or just spending time doing an activity with someone. You’ll be not only giving a gift but also strengthening a relationship.

Give Service

The holiday season is brimming with community events and service opportunities. Volunteering at a food pantry, helping out in community events, donating gifts, and shoveling sidewalks are a few ways you can serve. You can often find volunteer opportunities through local schools or churches. Service helps others feel God’s love. As Christ taught, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40). Sharing your time with others is one way to spread Christ’s love; serving others is a way we serve Christ.

Seek Out the Lonely

Though most of us associate the season of Christmas with love, excitement, and a schedule packed with holiday activities, Christmas can bring a sense of loneliness to some. Those who live alone, have lost loved ones, or live far from family often feel an ache this time of year for those relationships and the company of others. Make time as a family or with friends to visit those who may be lonely. Going out of your way to include others in your holiday activities is another way to share Christ’s love.

Share the True Meaning Online

We live in a time when sharing with others is easier than ever before. With the tool of social media you can instantly share a message with your friends wherever they are. Spread the true meaning of Christmas by sharing a video, image, or Christmas message on your social media accounts. Here are some videos and images you could share—all focused on the Christmas season.
