4 Ways to Cultivate a Peaceful Home

Safety from the Storm

Just as our homes provide shelter from raging, violent storms, they also provide protection against the constant noise and confusion of the outside world. Of such times, the prophet Isaiah counseled, “Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast” (Isaiah 26:20).

Home should be a place of refuge, a haven from the world. And it can be if every member of the family, led with love by caring parents, takes an active role in cultivating a spirit of peace in the home. Here are four suggestions for cultivating a peaceful home every day.

Keep Things Clean

It may be a simple thing, but a clean home is a peaceful home. So make your bed, keep laundry managed, and give children cleaning responsibilities. Things don’t have to be spotless all the time. After all, we live in our homes and living can be messy. But the old adage “a place for everything and everything in its place” contributes to a peaceful home. So take a few minutes each day to straighten things around your home and see how it makes you feel.

Eliminate Electronics

Maybe eliminating electronics altogether is impractical, but reducing screen time can cultivate a peaceful home. So put away the phones, turn off the TV, shut down the computer, and do some old-fashioned interacting. Plan a special family night, eat a meal together, play a board game, or even enjoy some quiet time reading a book. You may find that the peace you feel is too good to ignore.

Simplify

“Less is more” rings true for those seeking peaceful homes. When we are tethered to stuff and the debt caused by stuff, it’s difficult to feel peace. Watch as Elder Jeffrey R. Holland describes a group of people in Africa who find their peace not in material wealth but in something much more lasting.

Teach and Testify

Most importantly, the true path to peace in our homes and elsewhere is found in the gospel of Jesus Christ. God has promised to those who keep the commandments, “Thy peace [shall be] as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea” (Isaiah 48:18). Let the language of your faith in Jesus Christ permeate the walls of your home, and you will experience the Savior’s promise, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27).
