3 Ways to Be More Optimistic

It's All About Perspective

Hold a small stone up to your eye on a beautiful, cloudless morning, and it will obscure your view of the vibrant sunrise on the horizon. If you put the stone down at your feet, however, it will take its proper place in your line of sight or fall out of view completely. It’s all about perspective—how you see what’s right in front of you. If you are looking for ways to be more optimistic in your life, especially as you face challenges that seem to obscure your view, consider these three ideas to change your perspective and see things in a different light.

Look to Jesus Christ

Sometimes our challenges can seem more like boulders than pebbles. Take, for example, the story of Nathan Ogden. In an unbelievable twist of fate, he experienced two separate accidents that led to permanent paralysis. But through his journey, he has learned that the only way to make it, especially with any optimism, is by putting his trials in the proper perspective and leaning on Jesus Christ. The gospel of Jesus Christ found in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offers us hope that happy endings are possible for each of us and that as we trust in Him, we can be optimistic in the future.

Watch as President Russell M. Nelson reminds us that no matter what we face, we can be optimistic when we look to Christ.

See Those around You

By turning our focus outward to see the needs of others, our own struggles diminish and we can be more optimistic. Dov Siporin understood this concept and not only lived it, but inspired others as well. Through his own battle with cancer, Dov maintained an optimistic outlook by serving fellow cancer patients. Listen to his story here. And while our trials may vary in length and severity, we can be more optimistic about our journey as we serve those around us every day.

Watch for the Good

Watch for the good in your life every day. Acknowledge your blessings in prayer, write them down, or share them with a friend. In all circumstances, gratitude yields optimism. Regardless of our struggles, as we recognize the good things that have happened in the past, we are more hopeful that good things will happen in the future.

Watch as this music video reminds us that with all of our blessings, it really is good to be alive.
