Three Study Helps to Encourage a Healthy Marriage

By Mormon.org

Of all God could discuss with Adam and Eve when they were introduced to this world, their importance to each other was one of His main focuses. God intends us to “cleave” unto our spouses just as Adam and Eve did to one another (see Genesis 2:24).

As wonderful as marriage is, God understands it is not always easy. He has given us words from Christ and His prophets and apostles to help guide our marriage.

1. “The Family: A Proclamation to the World”

“The Family: A Proclamation to the World” teaches us God’s eternal truths about marriage and family.  It was inspired of God and written by His modern-day prophets. It gives us a clear formula for a happy marriage and a happy family life.

“Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities.”

Read and study the whole document here, and seek to apply its teachings to your marriage.

2. “Guide to Family Finance”

By Elder Marvin J. Ashton

Sadly, many marriages end because of disagreements or misunderstandings over finances. With so many vital expenses in everyday life, finances can quickly become a tense subject. Those who do not have a clear family financial plan may struggle to see their financial needs the same way as their spouse.

This article’s principles remain a solid source for using finances appropriately. Review and discuss the points in the article with your spouse. Determine what you can do together to ensure that finances are dealt with appropriately in your marriage.

Read it here.

3. The Teachings of Jesus Christ

Above all else, it is studying the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and following Him that will lead to happiness in every aspect of life, including marriage. When we emulate His traits of selfless service, patience, and forgiveness, it leads us in a direction that brings us closer to our Heavenly Father as well as our spouse and our family.

Just as Christ’s teachings always will remain, His love is everlasting as well. If you have struggles in your marriage, pray for help. The feelings you receive from the Spirit will guide you in the direction the Lord would have you go.
