When All Seems Lost

When Jesus stopped to share a meal and conversation with curious onlookers, the Jewish leaders were quick to criticize. The rabble, they pointed out, were sinners. Why bother with people Jesus knew were morally flawed?

Jesus responded with a question of His own. “What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?” (Luke 15:4).

It didn’t matter why the sheep was missing. Maybe it was injured. Perhaps it couldn’t keep up. It may have left of its own accord, or something may have happened beyond its control.

Whatever the reason, the shepherd knew that individual sheep. He knew something was wrong. And he went to rescue it.

“It is not the will of your Father which is in heaven,” Jesus taught on another occasion, “that one of these . . . should perish” (Matthew 18:14). God knows when you feel lost. He knows when your happiness is incomplete. And He can restore it to you.

Because God loves you, He wants you to be found. He wants you to be rescued. As you choose to return to Him, like the shepherd, He will place you upon His shoulders, rejoicing, and carry you home.

When you put your hope in God, it doesn’t matter how far away the answer may seem, how deep the despair, how intense the bitterness or the loneliness may feel. “For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost” (Matthew 18:11). If you put your hope and trust in Him, He can heal you and make you whole.

“Wherefore, whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world, yea even a place at the right hand of God.”

Ether 12:4

God has a plan for all of His children—and it’s a good one. It offers lasting light and hope in a world that often seems dark with despair. Jesus and God’s prophets shared this message of hope throughout the Bible. And you’ll find it in the Book of Mormon, too. Request your free copy of this second witness of Jesus Christ today.
