How to Change Your Life

Do you ever feel like it’s time to make a change—not just a change in your job or where you live, but a change in the actual way you live your life? If you’ve ever wondered how to change yourself and become a better person, you’re not alone.

Many people yearn for a new direction for their lives but can’t find it. The best new direction your life can take is to turn toward God and His Son, Jesus Christ.

God has a plan for you

You are not alone in life. God is real, and He’s watching over you.

God loves you

God cares for you more than you can imagine. He is the Father of your spirit, so He loves you in much the same way a mortal father cares for his child. The Bible explains, “What man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then . . . know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” (Matthew 7:9–11).

God has a plan for your life

Because God wants you to succeed and be happy, He has great things in store for you. Your path may not always seem clear, but learning about your purpose in life can help you see how God can help you grow and develop spiritually.

Obedience to God brings happiness

God has established guidelines

Imagine that you’re driving along a narrow cliff. There’s probably a set of guardrails to keep you from falling off the edge. In the same way, God has set guidelines (He calls them commandments) to protect you on your path in life. These commandments are intended to foster happiness and prevent harm and misery. God gave Moses the Ten Commandments in Old Testament times (see Exodus 20). They and other commandments from God have been recorded in holy scriptures so that we can learn and obey them.

Obedience brings blessings and safety

The Bible promises safety to those who follow God’s commandments: “For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life” (Proverbs 6:23). Of course, following God’s commandments doesn’t mean your life will always be perfectly happy. God considers trials and challenges as opportunities for you to grow. But even during hard times, you can find peace in keeping the commandments.

You can change your life

The feeling that you need to change could be a personal message from God. The Book of Mormon, a book of scripture that complements the Bible, explains this desire to improve: “For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man [and woman], that he [or she] may know good from evil” (Moroni 7:16). You have the capacity to choose to follow God’s path for you. If you feel you are headed in the wrong direction, make a change and turn your life toward Him. He’s ready to help you today.

God has commanded all to repent

The word repent means to change direction. It’s the word often used to describe turning toward God. Repentance means identifying parts of your life that are inconsistent with God’s will, fixing them, and then doing your best to stay on the right path. Yes, repentance is hard. But the prophet Alma taught that “there can be nothing so exquisite and sweet as . . . [your] joy” after repenting (Alma 36:21).

Repentance is possible through Jesus Christ

Committing a sin is like owing God a debt. As you commit sins, you accrue a larger and larger debt. There is no way to ever pay back this debt of sin and imperfections by yourself. Jesus Christ suffered and died for all of humanity, paying all of our debts. Because of His sacrifice, we can be completely free of the weight of our sins if we repent.

Join with others

You can find strength from other people who are also striving to improve their lives through Christ. Find a church community and learn the members’ reasons for—and the results from—turning their lives to God. You may choose to be baptized, which gives your life a clean slate while signifying your willingness to follow God. Just remember, nobody is perfect. God doesn’t expect you to be. As long as you are headed in the right direction, “neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate [you] from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38–39).

Are you ready to make a change? God is ready for you. Take the next step in the path He has prepared.
