Fred: Mormon.

Hi I'm Fred

About Me

I was born on an Island off the coast of Alaska. I am a third generation Alaskan my grandparents moved there in 1948. I trained in welding and love creating and improving things and working with men and women of the trades. Some of my cousins are fishermen doing the incredible things you see on Deadliest Catch each week! Several years ago I moved to Utah, and am now back in college again and loving it. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, and have a need for constant learning. After searching for meaning in life, I gained a testimony of the truth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1999. Jesus Christ has blessed my life and truly made me happy.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints because I know that the Book of Mormon is true and Joseph Smith Jr. restored the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Living the Gospel makes me happy!

Personal Stories

How has the Book of Mormon helped you understand the purpose of life?

The Book of Mormon is a book of scripture that Joseph Smith translated and published in 1830. It follows the history of a people who once lived on the American continent, and shows how they had prosperity and security when they lived according to God's commandments, and how they had contention and conflict when they did not live the commandments. Ultimately, this civilization rejected God's message. Not only does the Book of Mormon show societies how to avoid their mistakes, the lessons apply to our individual lives. The Book of Mormon contains another witness of the principles that Christ taught, and confirms that we are children of a loving Heavenly Father who cares about us and wants us to experience true happiness in life. I have read the Book of Mormon in entirety a number of times, and every time I do my testimony of Jesus Christ is strengthened. I feel God's spirit in me when I study the Book of Mormon, and I love the truths that I learn in it. The doctrine taught within the Book of Mormon is a significant witness to me of the truth of the restored gospel, the reality of Jesus Christ, the oneness of all of God's children, and the happiness obtained by obeying the commandments. My faith in God is strengthened by reading this book.

Please share your feelings/testimony of Joseph Smith.

Joseph Smith is my hero! I love his fearless character and Christlike love. Few men have given as much as he did and changed the religious world so profoundly. I know Joseph Smith is a Prophet of God!!

Please share your feelings/testimony of the Restoration of the Gospel.

Jesus Christ formed a church when he lived on earth. His church was run by Priesthood, the authority to act in God's name. Jesus had given the Priesthood to the apostles. When they were killed, the Priesthood was no longer on the earth. Joseph Smith was chosen by God to restore the Priesthood and the Church. I know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is true! Jesus Christ directs the church today through the prophet Thomas S. Monson.

What has helped develop greater harmony in your home?

Daily prayer and scriptures help keep love in the home. When I have a family of my own, I will teach my children to pray to God so they can feel His love for them.

In what ways have your prayers been answered?

My closest friend died six months after I moved to Utah. We met in the first grade he was 24 when he died. I felt I would never find someone who I connected with like I did him. I went to church activities in my new area, but there was no one that I really had much in common with. I began to be discouraged about my loneliness, and wondered if things would change. This lasted several years. I prayed often about the situation, and I felt that a solution was coming. It did! I started running into an acquaintance I had met before in the oddest places. The encounters were more than coincidence we hung out a few times, and I was surprised to find how much we had in common. Soon that connection I had lost returned again. Now we are best friends. I know that God heard and answered my prayers.

How can your talents and gifts bless others?

Everyone has unique abilities that they can use to help those around them. The LDS Church is a great place to discover what those gifts are and develop them. Church members try to help others whenever they see a need. You don't have to have great talents or remarkable gifts. I have found satisfaction in the assignments I have had over the years. Some were simple, like setting up chairs before meetings or bringing a dish to a group meal. Others were a little more challenging, like planning activities and calling and inviting people to come. All the service is voluntary, and is built around your feedback and what your situation allows. Serving others increases your own gifts and talents, and makes a difference for someone else, too. It is the best feeling.

Please explain the part prayer plays in your life?

Prayer is talking to God. I pray when I am happy, when I am discouraged, and when I have questions about my life and I do all the time! . One of the most encouraging principles taught by the Mormon church is that God is our loving Heavenly Father, and that he will communicate with us personally and clearly. I have prayed to understand specific teachings of the gospel, for help with my own challenges, and even when I am filled with happiness because of my blessings. God hears those prayers, and I feel his love in my heart and answers in my mind. Praying and receiving answers is one of the most helpful parts of the gospel, and God loves to hear everyone's prayers!

What have you done successfully to shield your family from unwanted influences?

I keep TV and movie watching to a minimum. Sometimes interacting with friends and nature is a much better choice than media.

How has your knowledge of the Plan of Happiness changed/benefited your life?

Before I gained a testimony of the Church of Jesus Christ, part of me was satisfied with life, but not all of me. Because religion interfered with my choices, I wanted to believe that God was imaginary and I could do whatever I wanted. When I moved from Alaska to Washington after high school, I severed all ties I had to my family's faith and did things that I shouldn't have. I did not see how my decisions reduced my happiness. Eventually, I became unhappy with life. I started attending church with an LDS group that met on a nearby campus, and the people there were so much fun. Living clean but having real fun was something I had never seen before these people inspired me to want to be like them. They taught me about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and encouraged me as I began making changes in my life. I learned that God really loved me and wanted to make those deeper parts of me satisfied. I have learned that having joy in life comes from living the commandments and having a relationship with God.

How has the Holy Ghost helped you?

I love the daily help that the Spirit of God (also known as the Holy Ghost) gives me! It is so much easier to understand people and choose the right with the Spirit's help.

Why do Mormons go on missions?

Missionaries go to share the good news--Jesus lives and life is meant to be the greatest experience possible. We can all know God and enjoy his love! He created our spirits and wants us to come back to live with him after this life.

What blessings have come through your faith in Jesus Christ?

Jesus Christ has taken away the hurt of the first twenty years of my life. I made bad choices and did things I regretted for many years. His love has removed all my feelings of guilt and I no longer think or act the same. Jesus died so we can be happy and find out who we really are!

How I live my faith

I want everyone to know how much God loves them and how special they are. If I can share something or encourage someone, I try to help.
