This glossary defines words used by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that might not be familiar to those who are not members.

Calling
A duty, position, or responsibility in the Church that is issued to a member by priesthood leaders. A calling is an opportunity to serve.
Celestial Kingdom
The highest of the three degrees or kingdoms of glory in heaven, where one is in the presence of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. The glory of the celestial kingdom is compared to the glory of the sun in the scriptures. See also Terrestrial Kingdom, Telestial Kingdom.
Chapel
The room in a church building where the main worship service is held. Chapel is sometimes used to refer to the entire building.
Charity
Love and compassion; the pure love of Christ.
Chastity, Law of
The Lord’s law of personal purity, which is that there must be no sexual intimacy except between a man and a woman who are legally and lawfully married.
Clergy
A group who leads or performs certain responsibilities within a religious organization.
Commandment
Instructions given by God to His children to prepare them for eternal life in the world to come.
Conference, General
A bi-annual world conference of the Church, held in April and October, where members gather for five two-hour sessions to listen to instruction from Church leaders and at which official Church business is conducted. General conference is broadcast via satellite from the Conference Center at Church headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Confirmation
An ordinance in which a person is confirmed a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and given the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands. The ordinance is performed after baptism.
Consecrate
To set apart or dedicate for a sacred purpose.
Convert
One who has accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ through baptism and confirmation into the Church, but who was not raised in the faith.
Counselor
One who serves as a member of a presidency or bishopric. A counselor has specific responsibilities, and is also available to assist the president or bishop when needed.
Covenant
A binding and solemn agreement, contract, or promise between God and a person or group of persons upon which eternal blessings are based.
Cultural Hall
The multi-purpose section of a meetinghouse, generally located at the center of the building. It is used for large meetings other than sacrament meeting, for cultural, social, and sport events.
