Baptism for the Dead |
 |
Baptism by immersion performed by a living person acting on behalf of one who is dead, as practiced in New Testament times (1 Corinthians 15:29). This ordinance is performed in temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. |

 |
To share knowledge received by revelation from the Holy Ghost regarding eternal gospel truths. |

Benjamin |
 |
A Book of Mormon king and prophet who worked alongside his people and refused to tax them for his support. He taught the value of service to others as well as the importance of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. |

Bible |
 |

Bishop |
 |
A man who has been ordained and set apart as the presiding high priest for a ward, or congregation. He has overall responsibility for ministering the temporal and spiritual affairs of the congregation. |

Bishopric |
 |
A priesthood council, composed of a bishop and his two counselors. |

 |
Book of Mormon |
 |
A volume of scripture included in the standard works of the Church. The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ is a collection of writings and teachings of the ancient prophets and followers of Jesus Christ who lived in the Americas from approximately 590 B.C. to 421 A.D. The Prophet Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon by divine inspiration from gold plates that he received from the angel Moroni. Books in the Book of Mormon are named after the prophets who kept the records, such as Nephi, Mosiah, Alma, and Mormon. A reference from the Book of Mormon may look like this: Alma 37:35-37. |

Branch |
 |
A local congregation. In areas where there are not enough members of the Church to create a ward, branches are formed within districts. Branch boundaries, like wards, are determined geographically. |

Brass Plates |
 |
Plates inscribed with ancient scriptures, many of them corresponding with books from the Old Testament, that the prophet Lehi and his family took with them to the promised land of the Americas. |

Brethren |
 |
Sometimes Church members use this term to refer to general authorities of the Church; see also Brother. |

 |
A male member of the Church. |
